If you haven’t tried cooking pizza on your Traeger grill – then you’re seriously missing out.
A lot of people don’t try making pizza on their grill at home because they’re nervous about the uncontrollable heat turning their delicious pizza into charcoal.
But that’s why the Traeger grill is so important because the heat isn’t uncontrollable and it gives pizza some of the most amazing taste sensations you can experience.
Why? Because a Traeger is more than just a standard grill – it’s a smoker too – and smoked pizza is one of the best tastes you can experience.
Trust me, I wouldn’t advise it if I didn’t think it was something that could blow your mind as a pizza lover.
But if you’re going to try and smoke your pizza on a Traeger, you’ll want to do the job properly.
So, that probably leaves you wondering: does a Traeger need a pizza stone?
Well, I’ll be covering that and much more below, so stick around if you want my advice.
Does A Traeger Need A Pizza Stone?
In short, yes, you will need a pizza stone for your Traeger grill, but of course, there’s more to it than just that!
Benefits Of A Pizza Stone When Making Smoked Pizza
Using a pizza stone with a Traeger grill is not only a great idea, but it’ll make everything so much easier for you.
If like me, you’ve ever tried making a pizza on a grill without a pizza stone, then you’ll know how difficult it is to keep the pizza’s shape.
Likewise, getting a great crust on the bottom of the pizza.
It’s definitely possible to cook a pizza on a grill without a stone.
But you’ll never get the same results as you will when using a pizza stone – and a Traeger is no different.
In case you’re not familiar with why a pizza stone is so great when grilling pizza, then here are just some of the main benefits I can think of to sell you on the idea.
I believe the results will amaze you if you’ve never used one before:
- Pizza stones are non-stick – this is such a huge thing because whenever I’ve tried to cook pizza on a grill without a pizza stone, sticking is a genuine issue.
The dough usually sticks to the grill plates whilst it’s raw, and then it cooks onto the grill, and removing it results in tears and toppings falling everywhere.
Of course, you could use a tray, but lots of people fear this because of the high heat grills can reach.
But pizza stones are non-stick, and they can be a lifesaver!
- Pizza stones can beat the heat – talking of heat, where trays and sheet pans may be at risk of melting or becoming misshapen and damaged, pizza stones are designed to deal with the intense heat of pizza ovens.
They reach similar dizzying heat heights to grills, so they’re perfectly safe to use in your Traeger.
- Pizza stones help the cook – one of the best things about pizza stones when using it with your Traeger is the way the stone actually disperses the heat evenly, so the pizza cooks perfectly every time.
Everybody knows that the perfect cook on your pizza is best achieved with a pizza oven (that’s why they’re so popular, after all)
But a pizza stone in a grill like a Traeger works much the same way as a pizza oven and will make the cook more evenly and the resulting pizza more enjoyable.
Trust me, I always use a pizza stone when cooking grilled or smoked pizza, and the cook is as good as any I’ve done in a pizza oven.
- Pizza stones are easy to clean – this might not be a huge thing for all of you, but it is for me.
Whenever I’m cooking pizza, I’m usually doing it with friends and family, so I need to have something that’ll clean easily so I can get back to relaxing and enjoying my pizza.
You won’t need to scrub a pizza stone or soak it to get it clean (in fact, you shouldn’t do this at all).
A quick wipe-down is usually all that’s needed to clean up a pizza stone after it’s been in a Traeger grill.
- Pizza stones guarantee a perfect crust – I’ve never been able to make the perfect crust on a pizza without a pizza stone!
And the reason it’s able to create the perfect pizza is that pizza stones absorb moisture, helping give that perfect pizza base and crust.
But because of the even spread of heat, the pizza is able to cook quickly too, not allowing it to get too moist in the heat.
This just gives you perfect results every time, and I can’t recommend pizza stones with grills and smokers highly enough.
So, using a pizza stone with a Traeger makes a lot of sense and I’d argue that yes, you do need to use a pizza stone with your Traeger. However…
Does A Traeger REALLY Need A Pizza Stone?
Now, I stand by the fact that pizza stones with a Traeger are life-changing and a really great way of getting the best results every time you make pizza on a grill.
However, I’d be lying if I said it was absolutely necessary.
If you would prefer to use sheet pans or trays in your Traeger, then you can find some great high-heat-resistant ones that are perfect.
Most trays that are fine for oven use are also fine for your Traeger.
So, if you line the tray with non-stick paper or use some oil, etc. so that the pizza can come off the tray easily then you might not need to invest in a pizza stone to get the job done.
Will the results be the same as a pizza stone?
No, I don’t think they will because I’ve never managed to get the same great results without a pizza stone, but for many, it’s good enough.
It’s also important for you to realize that pizza stones aren’t cheap.
If you want real stone pizza stones, then you can pay quite a lot of money for one.
So if you can make the best of the situation with an oven-safe tray, then sometimes that’s the best financial option.
I’m not here to tell you to spend money on things you don’t need – I’m just here to give some advice about cooking pizzas in your Traeger.
And for me, the pizza stone is the best way of doing that, but if you can do it with a cheaper oven tray, then there’s no need to invest in a pizza stone!
But if you are interested in buying a pizza stone for your Traeger, then I have a few tips below.
